ARTWORK MEANING 

This artwork confronts the eternal tension between redemption and rebellion—between the part of us that reaches for light and the part that clings to shadow. Inspired by the two thieves crucified beside Christ, Dismas & Gestas are not merely men, but mirrors of our innermost selves. Dismas, the penitent thief, embodies the radical power of forgiveness—the hope that even in our final moments, grace can rewrite the story. Gestas, defiant and unrepentant, stands for pride, ego, and the refusal to be transformed.

Together, they represent the polar forces within every soul: the will to surrender and the will to resist. This work is a meditation on choice, on mercy, and on the profound strength it takes to be forgiven—and to forgive. In their contrast, we are reminded that divinity doesn’t only descend from above, but rises from within when we dare to change.
